WhatsApp has become the go-to messaging app for over 1.5 billion users worldwide, thanks to its ease of use, endless features, and secure messaging. From photo and video sharing to voice and video calls, it does it all! But what about those important or secret chats you never want to lose? Accidentally deleting messages can be a nightmare, but luckily, WhatsApp has your back with a feature that lets you save and export your chat history directly to Gmail.
Here’s how you can effortlessly back up your important WhatsApp conversations to your Gmail account:
Step-by-Step Guide to Save WhatsApp Chats to Gmail
- Open WhatsApp on Your Phone
First things first, launch the WhatsApp app on your device. - Tap on the Three Dots in the Top-Right Corner
This will open a dropdown menu. - Go to Settings
Scroll down to find the Settings option, which is at the bottom of the menu. - Navigate to Chats
Once in settings, tap on Chats under your account options.
- Select Chat History
Scroll down to the Chat History option at the bottom and tap on it.
- Tap on Export Chat
Here’s where the magic happens! You’ll see a list of your conversations. - Choose the Chat You Want to Export
From the list, select the chat you wish to save and back up.
- Include or Exclude Media
WhatsApp gives you two options: - Without Media: Export only the text chats.
- Include Media: Export both chat messages and media files (photos, videos, etc.).
Tip: With media, you can export up to 10,000 messages, but without media, you can export up to 40,000 messages!
- Select Gmail to Export
WhatsApp will ask how you want to share this export. Choose Gmail from the sharing options. - Enter Your Email and Send
Type in your email address, hit send, and voilà! Your entire WhatsApp chat will now be backed up in .txt format in your Gmail inbox.
Why Should You Back Up Your WhatsApp Chats?
Backing up your chats ensures that your important messages are never lost, even if you switch phones, delete the app, or accidentally clear a chat. This method is also handy for saving secret conversations without anyone knowing—they’ll be securely stored in your email inbox!
Bonus Tip: WhatsApp will no longer support devices running Android 2.3.7 or older and iOS 8 or older from February 2020. If you’re using one of these older operating systems, exporting and saving your WhatsApp chats to Gmail is a smart move before upgrading your device!
